Brief History of the Association of Southeastern Minnesota Nurse Practitioners
On June 29, 1993, eight nurse practitioners (NPs) attended an organizational meeting for the Southeastern Minnesota Nurse Practitioners (SEMNP). The target membership area was established to include 11 counties in southeastern Minnesota. The stated purposes of the SEMNP was to “network among professional peers”, to “provide continuing education”, to “maintain current knowledge of legislative and professional health care issues” and to “support education and research efforts in this region”.
A revision of the by-laws in April of 2002 officially changed the name of the group to the Association of Southeast Minnesota Nurse Practitioners (ASMNP). In July of 2002, the inaugural Legislative Brunch was held and would continue on a bi-annual basis. In October of 2002, the first annual NP/PA Internal Medicine Review Conference was held at Mayo Clinic, co-sponsored by the ASMNP.
In April of 2004, the group’s third stated purpose “maintain current knowledge of legislative and professional health care issues” was changed to read “Facilitate opportunity for participation in legislative issues relative to NP practice in health care.”
On Thursday, September 29, 2005, Mayor Ardell Brede designated the last Thursday of each September, NP Day in Rochester.
