Greetings! My name is Marcia Britain and I am honored to serve as the 2011-2012 ASMNP President. This is ASMNP’s 18th year and the largest professional group of NPs in the state of MN. Several years of strong leadership and mentors have contributed to ASMNP success. I would like to thank our Past President, Kerry Stoick for her hard work and leadership in 2010-11.
For those who do not know me, let me introduce myself. My education includes: ADN 1979 - Hesston College, Hesston, KS; BSN 1989 - College of St. Teresa, Winona; MSN 1997, dual track - FNP/CNS –Northern Michigan University, Marquette, MI; and DNP 2007- University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. I am certified as a FNP through ANCC. My work experience includes 31 years of nursing experience with 14 years of Advanced Practice in Internal Medicine, Breast Clinic, and Surgery. I presently work in the Department of Surgery at Mayo Clinic as the Education and Quality Coordinator for 12 divisions. For fun, I enjoy being a grandma, biking, theatre, and musical events.
The 2011-12 ASMNP Board has recently met to update by-laws, set goals, and make plans for the year. Our 2011-12 events will include dinner; networking; presentations to include clinical pearls for practice, how to get involved in volunteering/mission trips; and committee updates. There will be an option to pay annual dues (NP or student NP rates) or pay for each event/dinner. We will be launching our new website this fall and members will then be able to pay dues on-line.
The ASMNP legislative committee continues to work closely with the Minnesota APRN Legislative Coalition. The Coalition’s mission is to improve patient choice and access to cost-effective health care by removing barriers that prevent APRNs from practicing at the highest level of their education and training. As Nurse Practitioners, we need to play a role in the changing landscape of health care. Accessible and affordable health care continues to be our goal.
Finally, I would encourage you to join your professional organizations, both locally and on a national level so you can be a part of changing healthcare. Professional organizations allow our individual voices to become collective and effect change. If you are a ASMNP member, encourage your colleagues to join. If you are a preceptor, encourage your NP student to join. Let your voice be heard. Share your ideas with our legislative representatives. Now is the time for Nurse Practitioners.
Best Regards,
Marcia K. Britain DNP, RN, CNP
